Our Story

In 1959, a small group of young families who wanted an evangelical, family-friendly church in Montecito began meeting on the campus of Westmont College. Soon after organizing, the church moved down the hill to our current location on Cold Springs Road and affiliated with the Evangelical Covenant Church. Since its founding, Montecito Covenant Church has been intentional about vibrant and relevant worship, combining strong preaching from the Bible with a creative and varied blend of music. We chose to model multigenerational life together and not segment worship by age or style.

Who We Are

Montecito Covenant Church is a people of God, called and committed to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, living by faith under the authority of the Word of God through the power of the Holy Spirit. Our purpose is to love and glorify God by

  • Worshiping Him in Spirit and Truth;
  • Growing in Christ-like maturity;
  • Caring for one another in love;
  • Sharing the Good News of Christ’s love with the world in word and deed.

Purposeful Disciple-Making

“We make disciples here” has become the banner over all that we do. We seek to engage people where they are in their journey, and invite and encourage them to take the next steps on their own pathway of discipleship. All of the ministries and programs are developed with the goal of making disciples here.

Beliefs

We believe that all persons are meant to have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

Our highest authority is the Bible, Old and New Testaments.

We believe in the “priesthood” of all believers, which means we are spiritually equal but have different functions.

We celebrate personal freedom in our relationship with Christ, and not a long list of do’s and don’ts.

We believe in mission; the whole Gospel by the whole church to the whole world.

Montecito Covenant Church is affiliated with the Evangelical Covenant Denomination and affirms its statement of faith.

What To Expect

The Word of God is the creative center for all worship. The Bible passage that is preached becomes the overall theme for worship, from the opening songs and hymns, to the artwork on the altar, to the children’s message at the steps with the pastor. Worship is meant for God to enjoy, as a gift from us. We consider worship as one of the most important things we do.

Our worship music incorporates a wide blend of contemporary songs and classic hymns, with occasional choral anthems and instrumental ensembles.  We are blessed with a great variety of musical talents in our congregation, and we view high congregational involvement in worship as one of our greatest attributes.

Staff and Leadership

The staff and Council work collaboratively alongside lay ministry teams to “make disciples here” by facilitating the worship, teaching, caring, and outreach ministries of the church.

The staff is led by Senior Pastor Don Johnson, but actually works more like a family, having fun together, getting the job done and enjoying time together (most of the time). The best word to describe the way we work together is “collaborative”. We set a direction as a whole church and then work creatively together under the overall direction of the elected Church Council to accomplish ministry.
